School is Out! Three Electrical Hazards to Consider when Your Kids are Home Alone

With the summer season almost upon us, kids are going to be left home alone for more time than they normally would be. With parents who are working full-time and kids being left home for the entire day by themselves, it’s important to consider ways to keep them safe around electronic appliances. We all live in homes that are basically surrounded by and run on electric and because of this, hazardous conditions and situations could come up when a kid is involved.

1. Using the Stove

Whether your child is eight years or well into their teenage years, it is still vital to teach them about the safety of using a stove and oven. If your child is very young or doesn’t have a lot of experience using a stove or oven, it is vital that you teach them not to use it. Many stoves and oven have safety locks on them that prevent buttons from being pressed when the security feature is in place.

2. Electronic Gadgets

Your child or teen also needs to know the basic safety of using electronic gadgets. Sure, most electronic gadgets are safe and easy to use, but they can also cause fires if they are left unattended or are placed in dangerous areas. For example, a laptop that is left sitting on a bed surrounded by blankets could cause a fire. The same applies to a radio that is plugged in and left by the bathroom sink or tub.

3. Air Conditioning Units and Heaters

No matter where you happen to live, chances are pretty good that you’ll be using either heating or air conditioning when school lets out. These units should be watched with care, especially when kids are around them.

There are many things you can do as a parent to ensure the safety of your kids this summer while they spend more time home alone. Teaching them the basics of security and safety can prevent problems from happening.
