If you own a home, you know what it takes to keep it functioning and from costing you money. Perhaps the greatest way a home loses money is on energy usage and, more often than not, energy waste. We leave lights on in empty rooms, run air conditioners when no one is home, and take those 20 minute showers that raise our energy bills month after month. We know these things are a waste, but we lie to ourselves and say “it will only add a few extra cents to my bill, not a big deal.” The truth is this type of wasteful energy usage can add thousands of dollars during the time you are in a home. Not that we would consider suggesting keeping your showers under 5-minutes, but below are a few other ways you can save on your energy costs.
1. Stop telling yourself your homes insulation is adequate. If you own an older home, you are dealing with old insulation technology (e.g. vermiculite, mineral wool, or worse). If so, each time you run your air conditioner during these hot Miami summers your “bought” air is escaping from your roof. Consider having an insulation installer come to your home and quote you what it will take to properly insulate your attic. Or, you can do it yourself. Installing insulation is not rocket science. However; installing insulation can irritate your skin and have you crawling around in some confined spaces, just be careful.
2. Stop thinking leaving your lights on all the time is not costing you money. Even if you have the latest and greatest energy efficient bulbs, it is still wasteful. Look into buying light timers which automatically turn lamps off. You can also install a motion activated light switch. These light switches cut power to overhead lights if the sensor does not detect movement during an allotted time. Great for bedrooms, bathrooms, and garages. You may want to consult with an electrician in the Cutler Bay area to have these switches installed. Messing with home electrical components has led to many homeowners making an unplanned hospital visit.
3. Lastly, turn down the temperature of your hot water heater. Constantly heating water plays havoc on your energy costs. Don’t worry, your shower will still be hot enough and you can still take 20-minute showers. However, you might not want those 20-minute showers when you realize just how much each shower is costing you.
