Pets and electricity are not a good combination. If your pet chews on electrical wires or disturbs the plugs, he can get shocked, burned or even electrocuted. Damaged cords can lead to house fires. With that in mind, it is easy to see why it is important to keep your pets away from electrical hazards.
Corral Your Cords.
Loose cords laying around are attractive items for your pet to chew or play with. Minimize the number of exposed cords first. Anything you don’t use on a regular basis should be put away. Next, run cords as close to the wall as possible, and try to keep your various cords together. Finally, use zip ties or twist ties to fasten the cords together, so you have one fat cord, rather than multiple thin cords. This will be much less enticing for your pet.
Add Protection.
You can find cord protectors as big box stores, office supply stores and from your local Miami electrician. These protectors cover the cord, so that even if your pet does decide to chew, the cords are safe. You can run the cords through a length of PVC pipe for a less aesthetic, but just as effective, solution.
Block Access.
In addition to protecting your pets from electrical cords, you also want to keep them away from where the plugs go into the outlets. Many pets find the rubber plugs coming out of the wall tempting to chew on. Positioning furniture and other items around your home to block your pet’s access to as many as these areas as possible.
These are three simple things you can do to reduce the risk to you pet and your home from electricity. If you still have concerns, or want some help in implementing these strategies, contact an electrician in Miami for advice or a consultation.
