Three Insider Tips to Save on Your Electric Bill

Saving on your electric bill does not take an advanced degree in electrical engineering. Simply cutting back on energy usage will reduce your monthly bill; rocket science, right? Of course cutting on your energy usage is easier said than done, especially during the summer months. Below are three ways to cut on energy use.

1. One of the most cost effective ways of cutting energy can be done with a $3.00 stretch of rope tied between two trees. Air drying laundry can reduce your family’s energy bill by $10.00 a month depending on usage. $10.00 a month is a saving of around 10% for most families; not a bad start. Not able to string a laundry line in your backyard? You can purchase a drying rack and place it in your laundry room for around $20.00. At that price the rack will pay for itself in two months. No room for a dryer rack? Throw a dry towel in with your wet load of laundry to reduce dryer time. The towel absorbs moister so your clothes can dry faster. Be sure to pull the towel out after 10 minutes of drying for full effectiveness.

2. Second, start changing out your light bulbs with newer CFL or LED lights. Yes, they are more expensive, but they last much longer. Not only do these bulbs last longer, but they use less energy to light your home. Most home good stores and even grocery stores stock these types of bulbs. In order to not feel the “pinch” of buy all the bulbs at once, buy one each time you visit the store. Also, and when you go to install one of these bulbs, be very careful not to touch the bulb with your fingers. The oils from your fingertips can shorten the lifespan of all types of light bulbs. Wrap the bulb with a clean rag in order to install it.

3. Lastly, and if you are serious in wanting to start saving on your energy bills, have a Miami electrician come and assess your home. Especially if you own an older home, an electrician can inspect internal components and make sure your home is a) up to code, and b) working efficiently. Never just assume your home is up to code, you may be surprised as to what is lurking behind your walls. They can also make suggestions on energy saving components you may want to install.
