Three Ways to Prepare for a Power Outage

A Miami power outage is not a fun event to live through. Losing power in your home typically means severe weather, damaged power lines, or your home interior lines are damaged somehow. Either way, you can bet such an event will leave you tapping your toes in the dark. Below are three ways you can prepare yourself.

Supplies
Consider purchasing a few five gallon buckets with lids. Store in these buckets items such as flashlights, batteries, a radio, matches, water purification tablets, plastic sheeting (tarps), candles, ‘canned’ fuel, and any other items you feel you may need. If the power is out, it may be due to severe weather. Tarps can be used to cover any roof damage. In case of water outage, clean buckets can be used to haul water, store ice, bathe, etc. Be sure to rotate any batteries you store in the buckets. Having these items on hand will keep you from the madness which occurs at the grocery stores during these types of emergencies.

Generator
A generator, even a small one, can help you keep your sanity during a power outage. B y powering your refrigerator you will be able to save food items from spoiling. If your generator is a little more powerful, you can run lamps, televisions, or microwave to help you get through the ordeal. Though the purchase of a generator may set you back a couple of hundred dollars, keeping a few beverages cold and on hand may be well worth it.

Know Your Outage
Not every power outage is due to weather. Individuals in older homes may already be aware of continuously blown fuses, dimming light bulbs, light fixtures which seem unsafe, shocks when flipping on or off switches, and a host of other indicators the electrical in the home is bad. Though you may be living through these indications, chances are you are just delaying the inevitable. Have a Miami electrician come to your home in order to diagnosis the situation.

Regardless of the cause, all power outages catch us all off guard. Preparing for a power outage may not be as bad as you think. If your homes wiring seems “off” to you, have an electrician in Miami come take a look. What you do beforehand will determine if you have to go stay with your in-laws; imagine that scene for a moment.
